Heads up for a head start!

IMG_9481How many of us buy our onion sets from the garden centres and leave them in the nets until the weather improves for planting outside? Well I must admit that I was guilty of that but after last year continuous rainfall, that seems to be repeating itself this year, I followed the advice of another fellow allotmenteer and planted my onion and shallot sets in modules of compost.

They settled in lovely and produced some fantastic top growth and a network of strong roots. They lived in the greenhouse until the weather improved and then they were transplanted into their final growing position mid April. I plan on giving them a head start this year too after the great success with last years crops.

  1. What a genius idea! Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant! That’s got to be worth trying here too

That’s a helpful tip. I should probably try it. We planted some sets directly in the autumn and about half of them have somehow ‘escaped’ from the earth. Squirrels? Storm damage? Another allotment mystery!
